Limb salvage in osteosarcoma using autoclaved tumor-bearing bone
BACKGROUND Tumor prostheses currently give the best short- and medium-term results for limb-salvage reconstruction procedures in the treatment of bone tumors. However, in developing countries, the cost of a tumor prosthesis is beyond the reach of much of the population. We report the use of autoclaved tumor-bearing bone in 10 patients, as an affordable alternative to the use of prostheses. ME...
متن کاملLimb Salvage for Malignant Bone Tumors in
From March 1984 to April 1991, the Orthopaedics Department of the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra treated 47 cases of malignant bone tumors in young children by limb-salvage surgery. Mean follow-up time was 4.4 years. The histologic diagnoses were osteosarcoma (33 cases) and Ewing's sarcoma (14 cases). All patients were treated following the Cancer Protocol of the Clínica Universitaria de Nava...
متن کاملLimb-salvage angioplasty in vascular surgery practice.
OBJECTIVE To assess outcomes of percutaneous infrainguinal arterial angioplasty for treatment of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLI) in poor surgical candidates. METHODS A retrospective clinical analysis of 67 consecutively treated patients (76 limbs) with CLI over a 33-month period was performed. Patients were considered poor surgical candidates because of absent distal target vessels (3...
متن کاملSquamous cell carcinoma involving the tibia treated by reimplantation of autoclaved resected bone.
We present an elderly patient with a squamous cell carcinoma over the subcutaneous aspect of the leg involving the tibia. En bloc resection of the tumour together with a 10 centimetre segment of the tibia was done. The resected bone was autoclaved, replaced in its original position and stabilized with bone cement and a locked nail. This allowed early ambulation with minimal cost.

INTRODUCTION We present our experience with limb salvage emphasising the use of vascularised bone grafts in combination with autoclaved tumour bone for limb salvage in osteosarcoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six cases with extremity osteosarcoma, all of which were managed at a single institution between 1980 and 1999, were reviewed at a mean follow-up of 9 years (range, 10 months to 200 mo...
